Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document
نویسندگان
چکیده
Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs) provide the physical and mathematical descriptions of the algorithms used in the generation of science data products. The ATBDs include a description of variance and uncertainty estimates and considerations of calibration and validation, exception control and diagnostics. Internal and external data flows are also described. The SMAP ATBDs were reviewed by a NASA Headquarters review panel in January 2012 and are currently at Initial Release, version 1. The ATBDs will undergo additional updates after the SMAP Algorithm Review in September 2013.

Slated for launch in 2015, the NASA Soil Moisture Active/Passive mission represents a significant advance in our ability to globally observe time and space variations in surface soil moisture fields. The SMAP mission concept is based on the integrated use of L-band active radar and passive radiometry measurements to optimize both the accuracy and resolution of remotelysensed surface soil moistu...

Given the importance of soil moisture for hydrological applications, such as weather and flood forecasting, passive microwave remote sensing is a promising approach for retrieving soil moisture due to its high sensitivity to near-surface soil moisture, applicability to all weather conditions, direct relationship with the soil dielectric constant, and reduced effects from vegetation and roughnes...
متن کاملTowards a Medium Resolution Brightness Temperature Product from Active and Passive Microwave Observations
Global measurements of soil moisture are vital to understanding the global water, energy and carbon cycles. An accurate estimation of soil moisture at a spatial resolution of better than 10km will benefit the future development of regional water resource applications, such as weather forecasting, flood prediction and agricultural activities. Therefore the objective of NASA’s Soil Moisture Activ...
